MUSEUM OF THE ARMED FORCES

Hours : 9 Am – 5 Pm Monday – Sunday.
Military museum which was once the house of Dewi Sukarno, wife of the late President Sukarno. Extensive display of weapons and armaments and a series of dioramas depicting Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Children find is fascinating.

Large collection of Indonesian antiquities and ethnographic items, one of the world’s finest Asian porcelain collections. Free tours in English at 9:30 am Tuesday, Wednesday, and the first Saturday of each month. A volunteer program for those interested in museum work is sponsored by the Ganesha society.

Historical Museum showing the development of Jakarta, part of the restoration project. Extensive collection of antique furniture.
ADAM MALIK CERAMIC COLLECTION

Pending the completion of the ceramic museum, the collection is being housed in the former wali kota building.

Rides for small children, a few ( roller coaster, etc ) for older ones.
JAYA ANCOL
Ancol is a large shoreline area of Jakarta which is currently being developed into a major resort, entertainment, and amusement area. One complex on a man made island has both beachfront and a protected lagoon where boats may be rented. And incorporates a bird park, tennis courts, swimming pools, motel-type cottages, restaurants and a bar. Adjacent to the island and surrounding it on all sides are other amusement, recreation, and entertainment facilities. These include an oceanarrium with dolphin shows, several swimming pools, each with a special feature ( slides, artificial waves, etc ), a drive-in movie, 40-lane bowling alley, the Hailai fronton, a driving range, casinos, restaurants, and night clubs. Still under construction is an international-standard golf course, Ancol is a vacation spot virtually within the city offering the proverbial “ something for everyone”
RAGUNAN ZOO ( KEBUN BINATANG RAGUNAN )

A delightful small zoo about 20 km. From Merdeka square. Elephants, monkeys, exotic birds and reptiles, including Indonesia’s famous komodo dragons ; deer to feed, horses to ride, also small boats to row. Weekdays the woods are pleasant for a family picnic ; very crowded on Sundays
CULTURAL PERFORMANCES
Several of the leading hotels regularly arrange cultural evenings, including traditional music and dance. Watch the newspapers for specific information. Many of the institutions listed in the “ libraries and cultural centers” section also sponsor special performances, as do various clubs and organizations.
BALI VILLAGE MOTEL

A complex on 22.5 acres featuring an open air theater on the form of a Balinese temple where Balinese dances are often performed. Exhibits of paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, batik and Wayang are given at various times during the year. Also small restaurant, other facilities under construction at time of printing.
THE JAKARTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Jakarta Symphony Orchestra, also functioning as the orchestra of radio Republik Indonesia, is the outgrowth of Nedherlands Indisch radio omroep which was formed in the 1930’s. A few of the present members have been with the group since those days. Under the leadership of its permanent conductor once a month, often with guest conductors and soloist, usually in the auditorium of radio Republik Indonesia, jl. Merdeka barat, and has a semi-fixed schedule of concerts, usually on the second tuesday of the month, at Taman Ismail Marzuki. Invitations to the former may be obtained from The Cultural Departement Of The City Government.

A slightly modernized version of the authentic Javanese dance drama, still close enough to the ancient original art form to be entirely worthwhile.

One continual; performance during which spectators may come and go as they like. Given in Javanese, but enjoyable even for those unfamiliar with the story.
