Madura, An Island Directly Across The Straits From Surabaya, Is Best Known For The Pageantry Of The Bull Races (Karapan Sapi) Held On The First Sunday Of Every Month At The Bangkalan Stadium. Dances Accompanied By Madurese Gamelan Are Usually Performed Before The Races. The All Madura Championship Races Held At The End Of The Dry Season In September And October Are Especially Colorful And Exciting.

Passengers And Car Ferries Leave Surabaya For Madura On A Regularly Scheduled Basis If You Are Going At The Time Of The Bull Races, It Is Advisable To Make Car Ferry Reservations The Day Before, Arrive About ½ Hours Before Departure. You May Wish To Send Car And Driver Ahead The Night Before And Take The Passenger Ferry Your Self The Next Morning Or It Is Possible To Take Passenger Ferry And Hire A Taxi On Madura. The Ferries Do Not Operate At Low Tide, Be Sure To Catch The Last One Back To Surabaya, Also. Several Lists Make Continuous But Unscheduled Trips From A Different Dock, Ask Directions, If This Is A Day’s Outing From Surabaya, Take A Picnic Lunch, Cold Drinks, And Protection From The Sun.

MALANG
Malang Is One Of Java’s Most Pleasant Provincial Towns, The Center Of An Area Where Great Hindu Kingdoms Ruled From The 10th Through The 15th Centuries. The Surrounding Countryside Is Dotted With Lovely Temples.

Malang Is About 90 Km, On A Good Road South Of Surabaya, There Is Also Train Service Between Surabaya And Malang, The Express Train Connects With The Bima.

CANDI SINGGOSARI : On The Surabaya – Malang Road, At The Town Of Singosari, Turn West On Jl Kartanegara. The Road Is Not Easy To Spot, So Don’t Hesitate To Ask Directions. The 14th Century Temple Of Singosari Is On The Right Side Of The Road. Further Down The Road, Two Impressive Stone Figures Guard The Former Entrance To The Complex.
CANDI JAGO : Five Kilometers North Of Malang, At The Town Of Blimbing, Turn East Toward Tumpang (Approximately 15 Km) About 100 Meter Before The Tumpang Market, On Unmarked Side Road To The Left, Is The Candi Jago It Dates From 1268 And Is One Of The Most Attractive Temples In East Java. Scenes From The Jataka Tales And The Mahabarata Decorate The Side Panels. The Caretaker Is Particularly Well-Informed And Helpful.
CANDI KIDAL : About 5 Km Beyond Tumpang, This Small Sanctuary Is An Architectural Gem.
CANDI PANATARAN : About 80 Km, South West Of Malang (2 Hr-Drive) Is A Singgosari-Majapahit Temple Complex Dating From The Mid-Fourteenth Century. It Is The Largest Sanctuary In East Java And One Of Largest In Indonesia.. The Temple Terraces Are Decorated With Ramayana Bas Reliefs. To Get There, Take The Main Road To Blitar, At Blitar The Birthplace And Tomb Site Of Former President Sukarno, Turn North To Panataran, The Road Is Poor But Traversable.
TROWULAN : At This Village, There Is A Museum Of Majapahit Art, Including The Famous Terra Cotta Figurines. In The Surrounding Of Countryside Are Numerous Small Temples, The Maps In The Museum Shows How To Get To Them. Do Not Miss The Splendid Stone Sculptures In The City Museum Next To The Bupaty’s Office In Mojokerto, Both Mojokerto And Trowulan Are On The Main Road Between Surabaya And Madiun, About An Hours Drive North Of Malang.

Sarangan, West Of Madiun On The Slopes Of Mount Lawu, Is A Good Overnight Stop Between Surabaya And Yogya. After Madiun, Take The Road Via Magetan In The Direction Of Solo. Sarangan Is About Three Quarters Of The Way Up The Mountain. Note: The Road After Sarangan To The Summit Is Very Steep, As Is The Road Over The Summit From The Solo Side; Many Cars Can Not Make It Over The Top. The Ascent To The Crater Can Be A One-Day Trip From Surabaya Or Malang If You Start At About 1 A.M. And Reach The Town Of Ngadisari In Time To Get To The Crater Before Sunrise. Travelers May Also Spend The Night At Ngadisari Or Sukapura And Rise Before Dawn To Reach The Crater. The Best Road To Ngadisari Turns South From The Main Surabaya-Banyuwangi Road About 4 Km. West Of Probolinggo, The Road Is As Far As Sukapura Is Always Passable. In The Rainy Season, The Visitor May Have To Leave His Two Wheel Drive Vehicle There And Proceed Via Vegetables Trucks Which Pass Through About 3 P.M. In The Dry Season, The Road Is Passable All The Way To Ngadisari. The Actual Ascent To The Crater Takes About 2 Hours By Foot And 1 ½ Hours By Horseback, Dress Warmly.

The Crossing Itself Takes A Half Hour, The Entire Procedure, Including Waiting In Line, Loading And Unloading, Takes About 2 Hours, It Is Advisable To Arrive Early For Departures.

The Only Consistently Dependable Road Follows The North Coast From Surabaya, But During The Dry Season, Explorers May Cut South At Probolinggo Or Besuki On Smaller Roads. Banyuwangi Is 297 Km. (7 Hours By Car) From Surabaya.
