IRIAN JAYA (WEST IRIAN)
A trip to this easternmost province of Indonesia, which occupies approximately one half of the second largest island in the world, is difficult, time - consuming. And immensely rewarding, particularly to anyone with an anthropological bent. Merpati and Garuda fly regularly to the main cities, Merpati into the highlands.

BALIEM VALLEY
This strikingly beautiful highlands plateau ( about 5,000 ft ) is the home of the Dani’s people. Twice daily flights ( weather permitting ) by Merpati into the valley. The traveler to this remote but fascinating area should go prepared to “rough it”, carrying some food, medicine, water purification tablets, sweaters, stout hiking shoes.
SIGHTS
Since the weather is temperate, the valley is very pleasant hiking terrain. You are welcome to visit the Dani villages and observe their daily life. The culture is very rich in unusual customs and dances. Take packaged tobacco ( available in Wamena or Jayapura ) and rupiah in small denominations for payment of services. Indonesian-speaking bearer-guides are available. The missionary air services which connect the scattered catholic and protestant outposts in Irian are generally for emergency use only by unofficial visitors.
